Welcome to the 2021-2022 school year at Rockcliffe Park Public School! I am excited to return InPerson with students and staff as we learn together.

Bienvenue à l'année scolaire 2021/2022 à l’école Rockcliffe Park PS. J’ai hâte de revoir nos élèves et le personnel, et de découvrir tout ce que nous apprendrons ensemble.

In 2020-2021, we navigated a challenging and unexpected school year with the roller coaster of Covid taking us through InPerson and Remote learning periods. Despite the challenges of masks, distancing, and staggered recess, RPPS staff, students and families worked together to keep our school safe. We also learned a great deal about flexibility and Google Classrooms!

Every day in education brings its joys and challenges. For students, I often repeat that my two main jobs are “to keep you safe and to help you learn”.  Everything else unfolds from there. This year will be no different, as we commit to student safety through mask wearing and other protocols.

As we start the 2021-2022 school year, our priority is to keep students and staff in the school; this means we will start with tighter protocols, especially in September. We want to avoid the back-and-forth of class or school closures. We will be cautious. We know how important sports, extracurriculars, singing indoors, and volunteers are within school and student life; these will not return in September until we are able to re-assess.

Rockliffe Dragons are determined, dazzling, and dedicated. Cherche à te dépasser chaque jour. It is up to you to be the best learner and best person you can be! Tes enseignants sont prêts à t’aider dans tes apprentissages. Strive for excellence. Look for opportunities to help others. The more you invest in kindness and gratitude, the more we invest in a positive and dynamic school.

In my professional background, I have the pleasure of teaching at elementary, secondary, and post-secondary levels. At one time, I was a math and chemistry teacher, at another as a guidance counselor, and further still, a professor with the B.Ed. program at the University of Ottawa. My career has allowed for teaching and administrative experiences in Ontario both at OCDSB and for the RCDSB in Deep River; as well as in Scotland and Bahrain in the Middle East. My past OCDSB schools include Gloucester HS, Elizabeth Wyn Wood Alternate, Featherson Drive PS and Mutchmor PS.

More recently, I had the honour of serving as Principal of the Canadian Armed Forces school at a NATO base in Belgium and as the Senior Education Officer for DND, I focused on teacher recruitment and educational policy.  Our family joke was that I was saving the world one policy document at a time.

In other parts of my life, my time is focused on being a “roadie” for my own teenage children, walking with my West Highland Terriers and training for my next triathlon challenge. Secretly, I listen to country music during all the driving, walking and training.

Did you know when a dragon shows good character, their scales turn golden?  How will you be a Golden Dragon today?
